Official ‘The Dark Knight’ Review

Most people probably don’t know my secret love for Batman. I truly appreciate the phycological aspect to the character, and the depth of the villains. That said, I will probably post soon about Batman’s influence on my life, and or comics in general.

Let me start by saying this film is the example that all traditional comic books super hero movies need to follow, just like Batman Begins was preceding this. That movie, and now this one, brought Batman films back from the camp and crap that was the 4 previous movies. Yes, I said 4. I watched all 4 of them in the past few weeks. In comparison to this movie, even the first Tim Burton Michael Keaton film, and yes even Jack Nicholson’s Joker are all cartoonish, and resemble the 60’s TV show more than the comic. And don’t get me started on the portrayal of a Batman who isn’t concerned with killing. The whole point of Batman is his code of ethics.

That said, this movie is a lot to take in. So much so that one viewing is not enough. Trust me, I saw it twice opening weekend. The first time was in an IMAX theater in Indianapolis. The second was locally in much more comfortable seating.

The Acting: Superb. Yes, especially Heath Ledger as The Joker. It exceeds the hype. He isn’t scary, so much as insane. If you watch carefully for what he represents, he plays it perfectly well.

The Script: This plays out like a good 7-10 issue story arch in the comics. It paces itself, and yet keeps jumping back into action. You will probably end up breathless at some point. Some have said it’s too long at 2 ½ hours. I didn’t mind it. Some say there seems to be not enough closure to some stories, but I say it’s got as much as the comics ever do in some senses.

The Sequals: With the 3 or 4 records this movie has already broken, and the amount of money it’s pulling in, more Batman films in this vein are inevitable. But I don’t want them. It’s not that I would not enjoy them, but I just don’t think that the quality represented in this film can be matched. I mean, we are talking all three Lord of the Rings movies good. I don’t want them to bring back the Joker recast, and I don’t think any other villain can truly represent a great enough threat without becoming cartoonish in this realistic Batman world Christopher Nolan has created. That’s not to say another good movie couldn’t be done for a trilogy, but it will leave this center movie as it’s peak of quality for sure.

Welcome.

I decided to start blogging again. I was asked to, and also wondering if I had anything to say myself.

This will be where I flesh out ideas in a more crafted way, as well as post some of the Facebook items I mark. Ultimately this is how I will expand my Facebook precense, and practice my writing as well.

I must admit I was pushed over the edge to this decision to start writing again by Jenn Swift. She is visiting our home town of Rochester NY right now, and has posted two very well written posts on her blog over at  http://jennylaneswift.blogspot.com/. Being a fellow Rochestarian that no longer lives there, but has a love/hate relationship with the place, it hit home.

It was during the reading of the two posts she has so far on this that I knew I still had something to say. “But all my friends look at my facebook page” I told myself. True, but this is still something I am doing more for myself. It’s less informational and “this is what I am doing”, and more about digging through my thoughts and organizing them in a way for myself to process things.

So, if you are interested, I will be posting in the next week a piece on why Batman is important to me. Sound weird? Good.
